Gomez: “Whatever’s Meant to Be Will Be”

Joe is unsure whether he’ll be here next season.

In a candid post-match interview following Liverpool FC's 1-1 draw, defender Joe Gomez opened up about his uncertain future at Anfield, leaving fans with more questions than answers. The 27-year-old, who came close to departing on transfer deadline day last year before a deal for Marc Guehi with Crystal Palace fell through, acknowledged his contract situation with refreshing honesty.

"I don't know is the honest answer. I've only got a year left on my contract, so I don't know," Gomez told Paul Gorst of the Liverpool ECHO. "Whatever's meant to be will be, but I'm so grateful to have had this time here at this club. I always will be grateful to have had 11 years at a place like this. All I can do is be thankful and we'll see."

The versatile defender, who has made just six appearances this season, also addressed the frustration from the home crowd—particularly audible boos during Rio Ngumoha's substitution and at full-time. Rather than deflecting, Gomez offered a measured perspective that resonated with the player-fan dynamic.

"I guess it just is a summary of our year and it's just a reaction to the whole year, and that's fair enough," he said. "The fans pay their hard-earned money to come and watch us and they're entitled to show their frustration, in the same way they cheer us."

Gomez emphasized the standards expected at a club of Liverpool's stature, noting the delicate balance between fan passion and player performance. "Fundamentally, the supporters want to see us give it all, but that is on the ball trying to play progressive football, trying to be intense, but also off the ball, put a foot in, try and win a tackle. That's just what is expected of us and being passive in any sense is not what I know and no one wants to see."

With Champions League qualification now the clear objective, Gomez stressed the importance of unity during this challenging stretch. "There's frustrations and there's been plenty of voices and discussions and meetings from different people—staff, players. Black and white thing now we need Champions League football, that's the objective we get that. We dust ourselves off and we go again and just go into the [next] year and have a good start."

As the season winds down, all eyes will be on whether Gomez's future lies in a Liverpool kit or elsewhere. For now, his message is one of gratitude, resilience, and a focus on finishing strong—qualities any athlete, and any fan, can appreciate.
