In a moment that will be etched into racing history, Golden Tempo thundered down the homestretch to claim victory at the 152nd Kentucky Derby on Saturday, making trainer Cherie DeVaux the first woman ever to win the legendary race at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky.

"I don't even have any words right now, I just can't," an emotional DeVaux told NBC as she made her way toward the winner's circle. "I'm just so, so happy for Golden Tempo."

Under the masterful guidance of jockey Jose Ortiz, Golden Tempo launched a powerful late surge to edge out the competition. Ortiz held off his own brother, Irad Ortiz Jr., who rode early favorite Renegade, to secure his first Kentucky Derby victory in his 11th attempt. Renegade finished just a neck behind, while longshot Ocelli—a 70-1 contender added late after multiple scratches—rounded out the top three.

"Jose did a wonderful job, masterful job of getting him there," DeVaux said. "He was so far out of it. He has had so much faith in this horse."

DeVaux's historic win places her in elite company. She becomes only the second female trainer to saddle a winner in any of U.S. flat racing's Triple Crown events, following Jena Antonucci's triumph with Arcangelo in the 2023 Belmont Stakes. Reflecting on her achievement, DeVaux said, "I'm glad I can be representative of women everywhere. We can do anything we set our minds to."

The race wasn't without its drama. The start was delayed when Great White reared and flipped on his side entering the starting gate, becoming the second race-day scratch in the $5 million, 1 1/4-mile contest. Originally scheduled for a field of 20, the Derby went off with 18 runners.

For fans of the sport, this Derby will be remembered not just for the thrilling finish, but for the barrier-breaking moment that proves the sport is evolving—and that champions come in all forms. Whether you're celebrating at the track or watching from home, this is a victory worth commemorating.
