The Golden State Valkyries have made a surprising roster move just one day before their 2026 season opener, waiving former Iowa star Kate Martin on May 7. The timing is especially tough, as the team was set to tip off the new season on May 8 against the Seattle Storm.

Martin, who turned heads during her rookie season with the Las Vegas Aces, was selected by Golden State in the 2024 WNBA expansion draft ahead of their inaugural 2025 campaign. Last season, she proved to be a reliable contributor, averaging 6.2 points and 2.7 rebounds while helping the Valkyries earn a first-round playoff appearance. In a preseason win over the Storm on April 25, she posted 8 points, 7 rebounds, and 2 assists in 23 minutes of action.

However, Martin's path hit a snag when she suffered a Grade II right quad strain during practice on April 28. While she told reporters on May 5 that her recovery was progressing well, the injury sidelined her for the final weeks of practice. Head coach Natalie Nakase and general manager Ohemaa Nyanin have not yet commented on the decision to release the 25-year-old guard.

The Valkyries' opening day roster now features six guards, including 2025 WNBA Most Improved Player Veronica Burton. But Martin's future in the league may not be over. According to USA TODAY, Golden State could bring her back on a developmental deal. Another intriguing possibility? A reunion with her former Iowa teammate Caitlin Clark in Indiana, as the Fever currently have one open developmental roster spot.

For now, Martin—who turns 26 in June—will wait for the next opportunity. Whether it's in Golden State, Indiana, or elsewhere, her grit and playoff experience make her a valuable asset for any WNBA team looking to add depth.
