The Carolina Panthers have a significant piece of offseason business looming: the fifth-year option for quarterback Bryce Young. While several of his 2023 draft classmates have already had their options picked up, the Panthers have yet to make it official for their franchise signal-caller. So, what's the hold-up?
General Manager Dan Morgan addressed the question directly during his pre-draft press conference, offering a straightforward explanation. "Yeah," Morgan confirmed when asked if the team would exercise the option. "Once the draft's over, we'll definitely get that going."
He clarified that the delay is purely logistical, tied to the NFL's busy offseason calendar. "Obviously, the player's not in the building yet," Morgan stated. "So, once Bryce gets in the building, and we're busy with the draft, it's offseason. So we'll get that done as soon as he gets back in the building."
The move is widely seen as a formality following Young's pivotal 2024 season. The former first overall pick delivered career-best numbers, completing 63.6% of his passes for 3,011 yards and 23 touchdowns. More importantly, he helped snap an eight-year playoff drought and powered the Panthers to their first NFC South title in a decade, solidifying his status as the team's cornerstone.
For Panthers fans and the organization, this is a clear case of "when, not if." Securing Young's future is the next logical step in building a consistent contender, and all signs point to it being finalized swiftly once the team reconvenes after the draft.
