In a stunning display of dominance, Glamorgan have taken 15 wickets in a single day to position themselves for their first County Championship Division One victory in 21 years. The Welsh side produced a masterclass at the Utilita Bowl, leaving Hampshire reeling and dreaming of a historic triumph.

Mason Crane, the leg-spinner who spent 12 years at Hampshire before moving to Glamorgan in 2024, was the architect of the hosts' downfall. Crane claimed three wickets in the first innings and another in the second, tormenting his former teammates with precision and guile. His first red-ball wicket at the Utilita Bowl in 1,080 days came when he trapped Tom Prest lbw, and he followed it up by dismissing Ben Brown just seven balls later.

The day began disastrously for Hampshire, who were bowled out for 214 in their first innings. Asked to follow on, they crumbled again to end the day on 118-5, still trailing by 204 runs. Fast bowler Timm van der Gugten was equally devastating, picking up six wickets across the day with relentless accuracy. Toby Albert and Nick Gubbins, who had made batting look easy on day two, both fell early to van der Gugten, setting the tone for a horror day for the hosts.

Teenager Ben Mayes' first Championship half-century was a rare bright spot for Hampshire, but it could not mask the scale of their collapse. Zain ul Hassan, fresh from his maiden professional century, also contributed with a key wicket, pinning Fletcha Middleton in front.

Crane, who took 86 first-class wickets for Hampshire before leaving for greater opportunities at Glamorgan, seemed inspired by watching Arsenal's Bukayo Saka on his phone the previous evening. "It appeared Saka's magic had rubbed off on him," as he shot through Hampshire's middle order with three wickets before lunch and another after the interval.

With five wickets remaining and a mountain to climb, Hampshire face an uphill battle to avoid defeat. For Glamorgan, victory would mark a historic milestone—their first Division One win in over two decades—and a statement of intent for the season ahead.
