The road to the SCHSL state championships is heating up, and South Carolina's top girls track and field athletes have punched their tickets to Columbia. After a thrilling Upper State qualifier, here's a look at the champions and qualifiers who will compete for state titles on May 14-16.
The action kicked off with Class 5A Division 1 Upper State on May 8 at Dorman, where local stars from Greenville, Spartanburg, and Anderson areas dominated the field. The remaining classifications will hold their qualifying meets on May 9, so stay tuned for updates as more athletes secure their spots.
Dorman proved to be a powerhouse, with Jacelyn Higgins and Laila Tucker leading the charge in the 100 meters. Tucker also teamed up with Kendall Miller to sweep the 200 meters, showcasing the team's incredible sprint depth. In the distance events, Mauldin's Gretchen Kale and Jayda Dyke took control of the 800 meters, while Callie Rohm and Avery Griffith dominated the 3200 meters. Mauldin also flexed its strength in the 400 hurdles, with Tatiana and Arriana Dooley locking down the top spots.
Field events saw equally impressive performances. J.L. Mann's Kamryn Chastine soared to victory in the long jump, while Dorman's Kendall Overbay secured a strong runner-up finish. In the throwing events, Spartanburg's Harmoni Harris was a force to be reckoned with, winning both the shot put and discus, with Dorman's Mattie Bandy right behind in second place for both events.
