The track is heating up, and so are the performances from our local girls' track and field stars. This week's honor roll for May 12 showcases incredible speed, endurance, and power across a range of events. Whether you're a fan of sprinting, distance running, or field events, there's plenty to celebrate.
In the sprints, Mayo's Taylor Kurtz continues to dominate, clocking an impressive 11.75 in the 100-meter dash and a blazing 24.34 in the 200 meters. Close behind in the 100, Stewartville's Avery Nelson posted a strong 12.33, while Mayo's Josie Van Brunt (12.37) and Triton's Averee Henslin (12.40) round out a competitive field. Over in the 200, Chatfield's Savannah Peterson (25.88) and Henslin again (26.08) kept the pressure on.
The 400 meters saw Winona's Calla Pike take the top spot with a swift 58.69, followed by Century's Kaia Berry at 59.87. Henslin showed her versatility with a third-place finish at 1:00.20, while Red Wing's Brynn Lawrence (1:00.52) and Century's Emily Bunce (1:01.14) also turned in strong performances.
In the hurdles, Rushford-Peterson/Houston's Aubryana Boldt led the 100-meter hurdles with a sharp 15.02, just ahead of Red Wing's Anna Stockton (15.22) and Samara Stockton (15.6). Over 300 meters, Kenyon-Wanamingo/Goodhue's Mali Quam took the win at 45.90, with Anna Stockton close behind at 46.15.
Moving to the distance events, Pike continued her stellar day by winning the 800 meters in 2:13.94, followed by Rushford-Peterson/Houston's Emily Helgemoe (2:21.15) and Lake City's Olivia Yotter (2:21.96). In the 1,600, John Marshall's Abi Tri led the pack at 5:09.43, with La Crescent-Hokah's Juniper Kabat (5:13.06) and Pike again (5:15.36) not far off. Tri also dominated the 3,200 meters, finishing in 10:49.23, ahead of Kabat (11:06.06) and Rushford-Peterson/Houston's Caitlin Bauer (11:12.79).
Relay teams brought the energy, with Mayo taking the 4x100 in 49.24, followed by Century (50.59) and Stewartville (50.93). Century also won the 4x200 in 1:46.26, with John Marshall (1:47.05) and Stewartville (1:47.58) close behind. In the 4x400, Century clocked 4:06.75, ahead of Red Wing (4:11.04) and Blooming Prairie (4:11.26). Winona claimed the 4x800 in 9:36.27, with Kenyon-Wanamingo/Goodhue (9:50.39) taking second.
In the field events, Century's Mary Amusan dominated the shot put with a throw of 43-10, followed by La Crescent-Hokah's Brooklyn Mitchell (41-4) and Mayo's Bryn Landherr (38-5 1/2). Stewartville's Ella Theobald won the discus with a massive 140-6, ahead of teammate Danika Shindelar (123-9) and Winona's Autumn Wadewitz (122-0).
Jumpers also shined, with John Marshall's Norah Miller taking the long jump at 18-9, just ahead of Boldt (18-3 1/4) and Nelson (18-1 1/2). Nelson bounced back to win the triple jump at 39-1 1/4, edging out Miller (38-10) and Nell Fergus of Lourdes (37-2 1/2).
