GIRLS SOCCER: Penalty-kick magic runs out for Claremore in state-quarterfinal heartbreak

The magic of penalty kicks that carried Claremore to glory just one year ago turned into heartbreak Thursday night, as the Lady Zebras saw their season end in a dramatic Class 5A state quarterfinal shootout loss to Lawton MacArthur.

A year after celebrating a penalty-kick victory over Duncan that punched their ticket to the semifinals, Claremore found itself on the opposite side of the coin. The Lady Zebras fell 3-2 in PKs following a grueling 100 minutes of scoreless soccer, ending their bid for a third consecutive semifinal appearance.

"Both teams played hard," said Claremore coach Brent Crenshaw. "We had chances, they had chances; it was a good game. What do you expect when you only have eight teams left in the state?"

The Lady Zebras entered the postseason as underdogs after graduating a large senior class last year, but they defied expectations all season long. "Not a lot was expected of them," Crenshaw added. "We've got a good group of girls. There's no split, there's no egos — they're all friends."

The turning point came in the shootout, where MacArthur freshman goalkeeper Avery Lowder emerged as the hero. Lowder denied attempts from Breckin Williams and Avery Roseberry, finishing with 10 saves on the night to send the Lady Highlanders — coached by former Rogers State University player Nate Inger — to their second straight semifinal appearance.

Claremore created plenty of chances but couldn't find the back of the net, firing 14 shots and generating several dangerous opportunities. In the first half, Williams sent a dangerous cross toward Ella Berglund that was headed just over the bar. Hazel Brown and Emma Easton also came close, while Alivia Payne had a quality chance denied by Lowder with under two minutes left in regulation.

"Grit is a word we talked about, and I thought we played with grit," Crenshaw said.

Defensively, the Lady Zebras held firm as well. Goalkeeper Maise Stagner-Speer made four saves in the shutout effort, while a timely defensive recovery prevented Naleah Cordes from capitalizing on a loose ball near the goal. Cordes later missed high on two separate second-half chances, and Ellana Burk had a bicycle kick blocked inside the box.

The physical contest also saw yellow cards issued to Payne and Roseberry, underscoring the intensity of a matchup between two of the state's elite programs. For Claremore, the end stings — but the fight, the unity, and the grit will be remembered long after the final whistle.
