After nearly 17 years away from the cage, Gina Carano is set to make a stunning return to combat sports. On May 16, the 44-year-old former MMA star will step back into the spotlight to face former UFC women's bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California. The event, promoted by Most Valuable Promotions (MVP) in partnership with Netflix, promises to be one of the most anticipated fights in recent memory.
Carano's journey back to fighting hasn't been easy. After stepping away from MMA in 2009, she found success in Hollywood, but as acting roles dried up, she fell into a deep depression. The weight gain and emotional spiral took a heavy toll on her health and well-being. Then came the unexpected offer to return to the cage against "Rowdy" Rousey—a fight that Carano says may have saved her life.
"Everybody around me is just so happy that I'm healthy. I mean, I think I'm healthier now than I was when I was fighting," Carano shared with MVP UNCUT. "I kind of like to describe myself as a door opener. I open the door and then people just rush through. And that seems to be a theme in my life. I'm impressed with how far it's come. It's so surreal to be able to come back and participate once again. I think once you're a fighter, you're always a fighter. It never leaves you and it's always been in the back of my head."
For fans who remember Carano as a pioneer of women's MMA, her return is a powerful reminder of the resilience that defines true fighters. She opened up candidly about hitting rock bottom before this opportunity arose.
"I was really not healthy. I was really sick. And I think in life you have a point where you can go left and you can completely give up on yourself and you can let all the stress in life and all the pain and just wear you down and you give up and get depressed and you let go. And there goes your body, there goes your mind, there goes your health," Carano explained. "I was there. And it's really hard to turn the corner and go the complete opposite way. I think my family and the people that care about me and the fans that care about me are just happy that I got this back under control. I'm healthy ... And I know I wouldn't have gone as deep into this health journey without this fight."
Now, with her fighting mindset restored and her body in peak condition, Carano is ready to write a new chapter in her storied career. "I have an overwhelming good feeling about this," she said confidently. For anyone who has ever faced their own struggles—whether in sports, fitness, or life—Carano's comeback is an inspiring testament to the power of second chances and the unbreakable spirit of a fighter.
