Former UK Open champion Andrew Gilding claims his first ProTour title win on his 442nd attempt, winning Players Championship 16 in Leicester.

After 442 attempts spanning years of near-misses and heartbreak, Andrew Gilding has finally claimed his first ProTour title, triumphing at Players Championship 16 in Leicester. The 55-year-old Englishman, best known for his stunning UK Open victory in 2023, defeated Jonny Clayton 8-3 in Wednesday's final to secure the £15,000 top prize.

Gilding's journey to this milestone was anything but easy. A six-time runner-up on the ProTour, he raced into a 5-1 lead against Clayton before sealing the win with a clinical double 10. "I've been waiting for this for a long while. I can't believe it," an emotional Gilding said. "I've had some great finals before. I remember playing Gary Anderson many years ago—he had a 112 average and I had a 107 average. But I finally got over the line."

The veteran's path to glory featured his best performance of the day—a 103.82 average in a 6-2 demolition of Challenge Tour leader Joe Hunt. He then showed his resilience in the semifinals, edging past Ian White 7-5 to reach his second Players Championship final of the year. "Your form dips and rises. You just have to be patient," Gilding reflected. "I've had such a good start to the season, I've more or less qualified for everything now."

The PDC ProTour series, which features 34 Players Championship events in the 2026 season, serves as the proving ground for the sport's elite Tour Card holders. While these tournaments aren't televised, they provide the foundation for darts' biggest stars to build their rankings and momentum. For Gilding, this breakthrough win proves that perseverance pays off—even if it takes 442 attempts.
