After an incredible 442 attempts, perseverance has finally paid off for Andrew Gilding. The former UK Open champion captured his first-ever ProTour title at Players Championship 16 in Leicester, a breakthrough moment that darts fans have been eagerly anticipating.
Gilding, 55, dominated the final against Jonny Clayton with an emphatic 8-3 victory on Wednesday. The Englishman stormed to a commanding 5-1 lead before sealing the win with a clinical double 10, earning the £15,000 top prize and ending a long drought that included six runner-up finishes.
"I've been waiting for this for a long while. I can't believe it," an emotional Gilding said after the match. "I've had some great finals before. I remember playing Gary Anderson many years ago, he had a 112 average and I had a 107 average. But I finally got over the line."
The victory showcased Gilding's resilience in a sport where consistency is king. "Your form dips and rises. You just have to be patient," he added. "I've had such a good start to the season, I've more or less qualified for everything now."
Gilding's path to glory was marked by standout performances. He delivered his best display of the day against Challenge Tour leader Joe Hunt, winning 6-2 with an impressive 103.82 average. He then edged past Ian White 7-5 in the semifinals to reach his second Players Championship final of the year—this time ensuring the result was different.
For those who love the drama of professional darts, this is a reminder of the grit required to succeed on the PDC ProTour, a circuit known for its intense competition. While these events aren't typically televised, with 34 Players Championship tournaments scheduled for the 2026 season, moments like Gilding's long-awaited triumph are what make the sport so compelling.
