Former UK Open champion Andrew Gilding claims his first ProTour title win on his 442nd attempt, winning Players Championship 16 in Leicester.

In a moment of sheer perseverance and triumph, Andrew Gilding finally secured his first ProTour title on his 442nd attempt, winning the Players Championship 16 in Leicester on Wednesday. The 55-year-old Englishman, best known for his stunning UK Open victory in 2023, had been a six-time runner-up on the ProTour before this breakthrough performance.

Gilding dominated the final against Jonny Clayton, racing to a 5-1 lead before sealing an emphatic 8-3 victory with a clinical double 10. The win earned him the £15,000 top prize and marked the culmination of a journey that began with his first Players Championship final appearance back in March 2014.

"I've been waiting for this for a long while. I can't believe it," said an emotional Gilding after the match. "I've had some great finals before. I remember playing Gary Anderson many years ago, he had a 112 average and I had a 107 average. But I finally got over the line."

His path to glory was paved with impressive performances, including a standout 103.82 average in defeating Challenge Tour leader Joe Hunt 6-2, followed by a hard-fought 7-5 semi-final win over Ian White. This marked his second Players Championship final of the season, showing consistent form throughout 2024.

"Your form dips and rises. You just have to be patient," Gilding reflected. "I've had such a good start to the season, I've more or less qualified for everything now."

The PDC ProTour, a series of professional darts tournaments for Tour Card holders, typically takes place behind closed doors and isn't televised, but the drama and determination on display in Leicester were worthy of any spotlight. With the 2026 season set to feature 34 Players Championship events, Gilding's patience and persistence serve as a powerful reminder that in darts—as in life—good things come to those who wait.
