Andrew "Goldfinger" Gilding has finally struck gold. The popular darting veteran claimed his maiden PDC Pro Tour title on Wednesday, defeating Premier League Contender Jonny Clayton 8-3 in the final of Players Championship 16 at Leicester's Mattioli Arena. It was a breakthrough moment for the former UK Open champion, who had endured 442 previous attempts and countless near-misses before finally lifting a tour trophy.

Gilding's path to glory was nothing short of determined. The Suffolk star, known for his cool composure, stormed through the early rounds with victories over Wesley Plaisier, Arno Merk, Dirk Van Duijvenbode, Jermaine Wattimena, Joe Hunt, and Ian White. Each win built momentum, setting the stage for a final showdown with the Welsh star Clayton.

From the opening leg, Gilding was unstoppable. He raced into a 3-0 lead in just 43 darts, leaving Clayton scrambling for a foothold. The Premier League Contender finally found his rhythm in Leg Four with an 18-darter, but it was only a brief respite. Gilding responded with three consecutive legs, stretching his lead to 6-1. The pair traded holds of throw before "Goldfinger" sealed the deal in Leg 11 with a crisp 19-darter, securing an 8-3 victory and the £15,000 top prize.

For Clayton, the run to the final was impressive in its own right. The Welshman defeated Marvin Van Velzen, Mervyn King, Derek Coulson, Andy Boulton, Gabriel Clemens, and Niko Springer before meeting his match. It was a strong showing, but Gilding's relentless pace proved too much.

The day also saw notable quarter-final runs from Premier League star Stephen Bunting and former Tour Card holder Callum Goffin, who stepped up admirably from the Challenge Tour. Meanwhile, Tuesday's PC15 winner Michael Van Gerwen was among the high-profile first-round casualties, alongside fellow Premier League rival Gian Van Veen. And in a moment of pure magic, Belgium's Kim Huybrechts lit up the arena with a nine-dart finish—a reminder that on any given day in darts, greatness can strike.
