Mario Gila has shut the door on contract renewal talks with Lazio, setting the stage for a heated transfer battle between Serie A giants AC Milan and Napoli this summer.

The 25-year-old Spanish defender, who joined Lazio from Real Madrid in 2022 on a five-year deal, has blossomed into one of Italy's top defensive talents. Yet his salary hasn't kept pace with his performances—at €1.1 million net annually, he remains one of the club's lowest earners despite his growing reputation.

While Gila's agent recently downplayed any urgency to negotiate, reports from La Gazzetta dello Sport suggest the player's camp has now firmly communicated their stance to Lazio's hierarchy: either sell him this summer or watch him walk for free next year.

This puts president Claudio Lotito and sporting director Angelo Fabiani in a tough spot. They're open to offers but won't sell cheaply, especially since Real Madrid still holds a 50% sell-on clause from the original transfer.

AC Milan initially emerged as frontrunners, driven by sporting director Igli Tare's desire to reunite with the player he originally brought to Lazio. Massimiliano Allegri is also reportedly a fan of the Barcelona native's composure and reading of the game.

But Napoli is now making a serious push to overtake the Rossoneri. While Milan remains locked in a tense Champions League qualification battle, the Partenopei have all but secured their spot in next season's elite competition—giving them a clear head start in summer planning.

Interestingly, Napoli has also identified Maurizio Sarri as their top candidate to replace Antonio Conte should he depart. However, their pursuit of Gila appears driven by more than just managerial preferences—the defender's quality speaks for itself.

For a player who arrived in Rome as a promising prospect from Madrid's youth system, Gila has transformed into a cornerstone defender. Now, with his contract situation reaching a critical point, the summer transfer window promises to deliver one of Serie A's most intriguing defensive sagas.
