Gibson: Red Wings Have no One to Blame But Themselves

The Detroit Red Wings have once again found themselves on the outside looking in as the NHL playoffs approach, and while there's been plenty of finger-pointing about what went wrong, goaltender John Gibson isn't interested in passing the buck. According to the veteran netminder, the only people the Wings can blame are themselves.

"We put ourselves in this spot," Gibson said candidly. "There's really nobody to blame or be mad at other than ourselves. It's a learning lesson, and hopefully we can use it next year as motivation."

It's a mature take from a player who knows a thing or two about carrying a team. When the Red Wings were soaring atop the Atlantic Division in late January, Gibson was a major reason why. In his first season wearing the Winged Wheel, the 32-year-old found his groove in a big way starting in December, going 9-1-2 with a .925 save percentage and two shutouts during that stretch. That month alone helped Detroit post an impressive 11-3-1 record.

"Obviously, it was a slow start for me personally," Gibson admitted. "But after that, I kind of got back to my game and just did what I do. I try to keep it simple, stop the puck, and give the team a chance to win. I was able to do that in the second half of the year."

Gibson's resurgence was nothing short of historic. He became the first Red Wings goalie since Chris Osgood in the 1995-96 season to post multiple eight-game winning streaks in a single campaign—a testament to his elite-level play when the team needed it most.

After 12 seasons with the Anaheim Ducks, Gibson was ready for a fresh start, and Detroit gave him exactly that. While the season didn't end the way anyone in Hockeytown hoped, Gibson's message is clear: the pain of this finish should fuel a stronger return next year. For a team looking to build an identity, that accountability might be the most valuable lesson of all.
