The New York Giants are wasting no time shoring up their defensive line after the departure of star tackle Dexter Lawrence last month. According to NFL Network insiders Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo, the team is finalizing a deal with veteran defensive lineman D.J. Reader, formerly of the Detroit Lions.

This move marks the third addition to the Giants' defensive front since the Lawrence trade, following the signings of Shelby Harris and Leki Fotu. The writing was on the wall for this reunion, as Reader had previously visited New York before the 2026 NFL Draft, making this a natural fit for both sides.

Reader, 31, spent the last two seasons with the Lions, appearing in all 17 games in 2025—a career first for the durable lineman. During that campaign, he recorded 28 tackles and four quarterback hits, though he didn't manage a sack. According to Pro Football Focus, Reader posted a solid 72.6 pass-rush grade and a 61.7 run defense grade, suggesting he can contribute in both phases for Big Blue.

While Reader brings experience and consistency, it's important to set expectations: he's not the elite interior force he once was, and he won't be a one-for-one replacement for Lawrence, who excels as both a run stopper and pass rusher. But then again, few players in the league can fill those shoes. Lawrence's frustration with the Giants reportedly stemmed from the team's reluctance to offer a contract extension, though sources indicate he was primarily seeking a fresh start.

Despite the blow to their defense, the Giants managed to extract impressive value from the Cincinnati Bengals in the Lawrence trade. New York received the No. 10 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, which they used to select offensive lineman Francis Mauigoa. The Miami product, initially billed as a tackle, will slide into a guard role in Year 1—plugging a major hole on the Giants' offensive line. Meanwhile, the Bengals landed the defensive upgrade they desperately needed, hoping Lawrence can transform a unit that has long held them back.

For Giants fans, this latest signing signals a pragmatic approach: rebuilding depth while maximizing draft capital. Reader may not be a superstar, but in a league where defensive line depth is king, every reliable body counts.
