The San Francisco Giants were clinging to life support after one of the worst road trips in franchise history, and Sunday's defeat pushed them into full desperation mode. As we've been told since birth, desperate times call for desperate measures—and in baseball parlance, that means desperate transactions.

So it shouldn't have surprised anyone that the team flying out of Tampa Bay on Sunday wasn't the same one arriving at Oracle Park on Monday to face the San Diego Padres, kicking off a crucial six-game homestand.

The reports trickled in Sunday night while the plane was likely still on the tarmac in Florida. Beat reporters confirmed the news later that evening, and the team made it official Monday afternoon. Exactly one month ahead of last year's "it's time to go" timeline, Buster Posey pulled the trigger on the biggest in-house moves he could make.

First up: Bryce Eldridge, the team's top hitting prospect since Posey himself, was getting the call. Joining him was Jesús Rodríguez, one of the finest contact hitters in all the Minor Leagues.

The third move felt almost like an afterthought—both in the announcement and in practice. After using two starters during Thursday's grueling doubleheader, the Giants needed an arm for Monday. With a shrug, a sigh, and perhaps even a blindfold, they landed on Trevor McDonald.

If you could inject truth serum into that press release, it would've read something like: "Giants call up top prospect Bryce Eldridge—oh my god, that's exciting!—and they also call up Jesús Rodríguez—my goodness, that's going to be so much fun! All of this is for Monday's game. And oh yeah, if you're curious (not that you care), Trevor McDonald is also up to start that game. Don't get used to him; he'll be gone tomorrow."

That was the sentiment, and I don't say that negatively. It's just the reality of the situation—and it was entirely justified. But that chasm in excitability was forgetting two of the most important factors in any team's success: the unsung heroes who step up when the spotlight shines brightest.
