The San Francisco Giants hit a new low on Wednesday, dropping to 14-23 after a 5-1 loss to the San Diego Padres—their furthest below .500 since July 2019. For a team with championship aspirations, this series loss at Oracle Park stings more than most.

The game turned on a heartbreaking seventh inning. Rookie Jesus Rodriguez, playing just his third career game, had handled right field flawlessly for six innings. But with the score tied, two on, and two out, Ty France sent a fly ball his way. Rodriguez gave chase, dove, and stretched his glove—only to see the ball glance off and roll to the wall. France cruised into third as both go-ahead runs scored, putting the game out of reach.

It was a tough break for a kid who had been solid all night, and it overshadowed what was otherwise a strong pitching performance. Adrian Houser delivered his best start as a Giant, holding San Diego to just three hits over six-plus innings. The only damage came on a Gavin Sheets Splash Hit in the fourth, but Houser still left with nothing to show for it.

Rafael Devers provided the Giants' lone highlight, launching a solo homer to left in the fifth off Matt Waldron. It was Devers' third home run of the year and tied the game at 1. He's now hitting .318 with an .833 OPS over his last seven games—one of his most productive stretches of the season.

But the seventh inning unraveled everything. It started when Fernando Tatis Jr. reached base after Matt Chapman couldn't handle a hard chopper to third. Then came Rodriguez's near-miss, and the Padres never looked back. San Diego outscored the Giants 14-2 over the final 15 innings of the series, a brutal collapse after San Francisco won the opener.

For Giants fans, this feels like déjà vu from the dark days of 2019. The team is struggling to find consistency, and every game seems to bring a new heartbreak. With the season slipping away, the club needs to find its footing—and fast.
