Dominic Frimpong of Ghanaian Premier League club Berekum Chelsea was killed after the team's bus was attacked by a group of suspected armed robbers, the country's soccer association said Monday. The incident happened on Sunday as Berekum Chelsea was returning from its game against Samartex in Samreboi in southern Ghana, the club said in a statement.

The Ghanaian football community is in mourning following a horrific and tragic incident. Dominic Frimpong, a 20-year-old winger for Ghanaian Premier League side Berekum Chelsea, was killed after the team's bus was attacked by suspected armed robbers.

The attack occurred on Sunday as the team was returning from an away fixture against Samartex in Samreboi. According to a club statement, masked assailants wielding guns and assault rifles opened fire on the bus. As the driver attempted to reverse, players and staff were forced to flee into nearby bushes for safety. Another player sustained serious injuries and is receiving hospital treatment.

The Ghana Football Association confirmed Frimpong's death, paying tribute to the young talent. "This tragic incident is not only a huge loss to Berekum Chelsea but also to Ghana football as a whole," the GFA stated, highlighting Frimpong's dedication and passion. In response, the governing body pledged to strengthen security protocols for team travel, a critical concern given that a similar attack on Legon Cities' team bus occurred in 2023.

This devastating event is a stark reminder of the challenges athletes can face beyond the pitch, casting a shadow over the league and robbing Ghanaian football of a promising young star.
