The German Football League (DFL) will receive a loan of up to €100 million ($117.3 million) from sports goods makers adidas in an effort to strengthen its media marketing efforts.

The DFL said on Tuesday that at the same time a deal with adidas to provide the official match ball from next season onwards for its events led by the Bundesliga has been renewed by four years until 2034.

The DFL had previously aimed to land external investors to boost its marketing efforts but that was vetoed by the clubs after fan protests.

The loan agreement with adidas adopted by the DFL executive committee requires approval by the DFL members which are all 36 first and second division clubs.

League President Hans-Joachim Watzke said the deal will "contribute to a positive future for German professional football.

"The financing model offers an important option for investing in the growth of the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 in economically dynamic times. It is a model signal beyond football that the shared goal of further development is at the centre here," he said.
