In the ever-shifting landscape of college football recruiting, loyalty is often tested—and for Milton (Ga.) three-star quarterback Derrick Baker, that test just got a whole lot bigger.
Baker, who has been firmly committed to the Tennessee Volunteers for nearly three months, is now drawing serious attention from one of the sport's most dominant programs: the Georgia Bulldogs. On Wednesday evening, the Milton High School football account announced that Baker had received an official offer from Georgia, sending ripples through the recruiting world.
For the Bulldogs, this move is part of a broader strategy as they continue their search for a quarterback in the 2027 cycle. With official visit season on the horizon, Georgia has been actively dishing out offers, and Baker—who plays just a stone's throw from Athens—is the latest target. It's a classic case of a local talent catching the eye of a powerhouse right in his backyard.
But don't expect Baker to waver easily. Last month, he added South Carolina to his growing offer sheet, and Florida State was a serious contender before he pledged to Tennessee back in February. Yet, the Vols have held strong.
“My commitment is strong with Tennessee,” Baker told Rivals' Chad Simmons last month. “The coaches have been great since I committed, and it was great to be back up there on Thursday. It’s a great area, a great place to be around, and a top program. With Coach Heupel’s leadership and the experience on that staff, I really believe Tennessee is on the way to being the best program in the country.”
Baker's confidence in Knoxville is rooted in the Vols' upward trajectory under head coach Josh Heupel, and flipping him away from that vision won't be an easy task for Georgia or any other suitor. As a prospect, Baker is ranked No. 594 overall and No. 38 among quarterbacks in the 2027 cycle according to the Rivals Industry Ranking, a weighted average of major recruiting media outlets. He also sits as the No. 64 player in the talent-rich state of Georgia.
As his senior season approaches, Baker is poised to be one of the most closely watched recruits in the region—a quarterback with a strong commitment, a rising stock, and now, the attention of college football's reigning elite.
