Reacting to the fates of the Lopes and Wolf Pack in the 2026 NCAA Tournament.

The GCU Lopes and Nevada Wolf Pack have officially learned their NCAA Tournament fates, and the reactions are a mix of excitement and heartbreak. The conference champion Lopes are heading to Lincoln, Nebraska, as the No. 3 seed in the regional—effectively a No. 9 national seed. They'll open against No. 8-seeded Louisville in what promises to be a thrilling first-round showdown. For the Wolf Pack, however, the news was a gut punch. After a disastrous weekend, Nevada missed the tournament for the second straight year, landing among the "first four out" once again.

The Lincoln Regional is stacked, headlined by the No. 4 national seed and No. 1 bracket seed, the Nebraska Cornhuskers (46-6). The Huskers just captured the Big Ten title and have been a powerhouse all season, with 31 of their 46 wins coming against top-100 RPI teams—including 19 against the top 50. That's a stark contrast to GCU's resume, which features just 13 wins over top-100 teams and five against the top 50. Nebraska, which fell to No. 7 seed Tennessee in a three-game Super Regional last year, might be feeling slighted after being jumped by SEC teams like Alabama and Texas in the national rankings. That chip on their shoulder makes them even more dangerous.

Louisville (42-12) is the No. 2 seed in the regional and ranks No. 29 in RPI—just two spots behind GCU. The Cardinals are 19-10 against top-100 opponents and are coming off a narrow loss to No. 5 seed Stanford in the ACC quarterfinals. They're a formidable opponent and will test the Lopes right out of the gate in what should be a high-intensity opener.

Rounding out the regional is South Dakota (20-34-1), the No. 4 seed and clear underdog. The Coyotes rank 159th in RPI but earned their spot by upsetting Omaha in the Summit League championship, knocking out a perennial mid-major threat. While they're riding high, they're likely to be the losers' bracket counterpart for whoever falls in the GCU-Louisville matchup.

This is a tough draw for GCU. The Lopes will need to bring their A-game from the first pitch, especially with a hungry Nebraska squad waiting in the wings. But that's what March softball is all about—survive and advance.
