Emile Cairess is ruled out of this year's London Marathon - where he was expected to challenge Sir Mo Farah's British record - because of a calf issue.

In a major blow to the British contingent, Emile Cairess has been forced to withdraw from the 2026 London Marathon due to a persistent calf injury. The 28-year-old, who finished a stunning third in the 2024 race, was widely tipped as a contender to challenge Sir Mo Farah's long-standing British record of 2:05:11.

This marks the second consecutive year Cairess has missed the iconic London event, having also been sidelined in 2025 with an ankle tendon issue. The latest setback stems from a calf problem that emerged earlier in his training block and has ultimately hampered his preparation too severely to compete at the elite level required.

"I am gutted to be withdrawing," Cairess stated. "After missing last year's race, I was so excited at the prospect of returning... but out of respect to both the race and the distance, I only want to be on the start line if I'm in the best possible condition." He expressed his hope to return to the London Marathon in 2027.

Cairess, who owns a personal best of 2:06:46, had previously expressed confidence that he was in shape to break Farah's record. His withdrawal follows that of women's world champion Peres Jepchirchir, highlighting the fine line elite athletes walk in their grueling marathon preparations. The race will go on without him this Sunday, April 26th, leaving fans to wonder what might have been in a highly anticipated record attempt.
