In a heartfelt tribute that continues to inspire the hockey community, the Gaudreau Family Foundation is set to host a special fundraising event on May 16 at Washington Lake Park in Sewell, New Jersey. This event honors the enduring legacy of brothers Johnny and Matty Gaudreau, whose lives were tragically cut short in a traffic accident in Salem County in August 2024.
Johnny Gaudreau, affectionately known as "Johnny Hockey," was a seven-time NHL All-Star who dazzled fans with the Calgary Flames and Columbus Blue Jackets. His younger brother, Matty, was a rising star in minor league hockey and a dedicated coach. Both brothers shared a deep love for the game and their community, having played together at Gloucester Catholic High School and Boston College before pursuing their professional dreams.
The May 16 event promises a full day of family-friendly activities, including a 5K run, a 2-mile walk, music and dance performances, yoga sessions, face-painting, a balloon artist, and lawn games. While the run, walk, and cornhole tournament have already reached capacity, spots remain open for a diaper dash and a kids' race for children under 11. Celebrity guest appearances are also expected, along with food, beverages, and raffle sales.
"John and Matty's lives were defined by their generosity, kindness, and love for their community and family," their parents, Jane and Guy Gaudreau, shared in a heartfelt statement. The foundation, they explained, provides "the opportunity to continue the good work they would have done."
The event also features a virtual component, allowing participants to register online and run or walk from anywhere. Last year's inaugural event drew more than 1,000 virtual participants and raised over $500,000 for a playground at Archbishop Damiano School in Deptford—a testament to the lasting impact the Gaudreau brothers had on their community.
