Ted Turner wasn't just a sailor—he was a force of nature who changed the face of both competitive sailing and global media forever. As the founder of CNN, the world's first 24-hour news network, he revolutionized how we consume information. But before he became a media titan, Turner was already making waves on the water, and his legacy continues to inspire sailors and sports enthusiasts alike.

America's Cup legend Gary Jobson, co-president of The Sailing Museum & National Sailing Hall of Fame, recently shared personal memories of Turner, who passed away today. "Ted Turner was one of the most consequential and transformative figures in the history of modern sailing and global media," Jobson wrote alongside fellow co-president Tom Stark. "Long before he revolutionized television, he had already established himself as a fierce competitor, visionary leader, and unforgettable presence on and off the water."

Turner's journey in sailing began at the age of eight in Savannah, Georgia. And while his early results weren't exactly stellar, he had a trademark way of spinning it: "I wasn't losing, I was just learning how to win." That mindset defined his career, leading him to the pinnacle of the sport—winning the America's Cup aboard Courageous in 1977, a moment captured in iconic photos from Newport, Rhode Island.

But what set Turner apart wasn't just his competitive fire. It was his character. "Turner's virtues were grounded in hard work, loyalty, and kindness," Jobson recalled. "Anyone who has ever met Ted will always say nice things about him. He was down to earth and cared about making the world a better place." A telling detail: Turner kept a bumper sticker on all his vehicles that simply read, "Save Everything."

For those fortunate enough to race alongside him, the bond lasted a lifetime. Turner was colorful, magnetic, and always drew a crowd. Jobson remembers a race on Courageous where Turner's leadership and loyalty shone through—a testament to how he inspired those around him. Whether you're a seasoned sailor or someone who just loves a great story of grit and vision, Ted Turner's legacy is one for the ages.
