In the ever-unpredictable world of professional boxing, Matchroom's upcoming June 6 show in Sheffield has seen yet another shake-up, but the fight night is very much still on.
Originally, the card was headlined by Dalton Smith's WBC super lightweight title defense against Alberto Puello. However, an injury to Smith forced that bout to be postponed. Stepping into the spotlight was a flyweight world title clash between Ricardo Sandoval and Galal Yafai, with Sandoval's WBC and WBA belts on the line. Now, that fight is off too, as Yafai has been sidelined by an injury.
But rather than scrap the event, Matchroom has quickly pivoted, and the new main event is a compelling all-British showdown. Josh Padley will defend his European super featherweight title against Aqib Fiaz at the Utilita Arena Sheffield.
While it may not carry world title status, this matchup has all the ingredients for a thrilling contest. Padley (18-1, 6 KOs) has been on a solid run, winning three straight fights since a brave, short-notice lightweight title loss to Shakur Stevenson in early 2025. That defeat came on the heels of his breakout upset victory over Mark Chamberlain in late 2024, proving he can hang with top-level competition.
Fiaz (14-1, 2 KOs) is no slouch either. After suffering a loss to Reece Bellotti in late 2023, he has bounced back with two consecutive wins, including a decision victory over Alex Murphy in a lightweight bout. While his last two fights have been at 135 pounds, he's dropping back down to 130 for this title opportunity, showing his commitment to the challenge.
It would have been easy for Matchroom to simply postpone the entire card after losing two world title main events. But credit to the promotion for keeping the show on the road, ensuring the rest of the fighters on the bill stay active and get their payday. For boxing fans, this reshuffled lineup still promises plenty of action—and a chance to see two rising stars settle their differences in the ring.
