Gabi Brito wins the 100-yard butterfly and 50-yard freestyle titles to lead Santa Monica to victory at the Southern Section Division 1 finals.

In a stunning display of resilience and raw talent, Santa Monica High School's Gabi Brito turned frustration into triumph at the Southern Section Division 1 swimming finals, held Saturday at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut. The sophomore sensation not only defended her titles but shattered records, leading the Vikings to yet another team championship—their 12th consecutive division crown, a new section record that eclipses Mission Viejo's previous mark of 11 straight.

The drama unfolded in the 100-yard butterfly, where Brito initially thought she had fallen short. After glancing at the scoreboard and seeing 51.65 seconds next to her name, she believed she had missed her chance to beat the 51.41 she posted at prelims—a time that had already broken the Division 1 record. But moments later, officials corrected the timing, upgrading her official winning time to an astonishing 50.74 seconds. That's nearly half a second faster than her previous personal best of 51.20, set at the Speedo Sectionals in February. "I soft-touched and some coach told me they'd corrected it, so I got a lot happier," Brito said with a smile. "It's a relief given that I'm not going to state, so this is my last high school meet of the season."

The 15-year-old had little time to catch her breath after winning the 50-yard freestyle earlier in the session. Her time of 21.66 seconds not only lowered the personal best of 21.93 she swam at prelims but came within two-hundredths of a second of the meet record set by Abbey Weitzeil of Saugus in 2015. "I'm very surprised with the 50," admitted Brito, who also swept both events as a freshman. "I was confident I could go 21 again. I had more pre-race jitters than usual."

With only 15 minutes between events, Brito showcased her versatility and composure, later anchoring both freestyle relays. Santa Monica finished third in the 200-yard relay (1:35.29) and clinched first in the 400-yard relay (3:38.40). "I do a lot of quick turnarounds, and I know how to manage myself," she explained. "I'm only 15, so who knows what I can do? If I have a rested 100 fly, I can go faster."

Brito now sets her sights on the Speedo Grand Challenge on May 22-24 in Irvine, where she'll continue to push the limits of what's possible in the pool. For Santa Monica, the dynasty shows no signs of slowing down—and with Brito leading the charge, the future looks even brighter.
