The Buffalo Bills went from AFC East division rivals to trade partners for the New England Patriots on Day 1 of the 2026 NFL Draft on Thursday.

Heading into the event, some wondered if the Patriots would trade down for more picks at No. 31, but they opted to be aggressive and trade up for Utah offensive tackle Caleb Lomu. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Patriots sent the No. 31 pick and No. 125 pick to the Bills in exchange for the No. 28 pick.

Drafting another offensive tackle for a second straight year wasn't the flashiest move, but it shows an overall commitment to solidifying the offensive front for quarterback Drake Maye. The hope is that Will Campbell remains the long-term plan at left tackle, while Lomu eventually takes the mantle from veteran Morgan Moses on the right side.

Whether that's in training camp, later in the season or next year remains to be seen.

Moses had a strong year with the Patriots last season, but he is also 35 years old with questions surrounding his long-term health. If anything, he should serve as a strong mentor for Lomu, as he did for Campbell last season.
