With everything on the line in their League Two finale, Newport County boss Christian Fuchs is urging his squad to keep their cool and "take the fire out of the game" when they face bottom-of-the-table Barrow this Saturday (15:00 BST).
The stakes couldn't be higher at Holker Street. A win for the Exiles would secure their survival in the division, but depending on other results, a draw—or even a loss—might keep them up. Currently sitting 21st, Newport are just one point ahead of Crawley Town and Harrogate Town, who face Salford City and Barnet respectively. For Barrow, the math is simple but brutal: they need a win and for both Crawley and Harrogate to lose, combined with a significant goal-difference swing.
With emotions set to run high in such a pressure-cooker environment, Fuchs—a former Leicester City Premier League winner—knows that passion alone won't get the job done. "Why should I talk to them about what's at stake? Everybody knows that already," he said. "It's more about the approach, what we want to implement in a game, and what the mindset needs to be."
That mindset was put to the test in last weekend's extraordinary 3-2 victory over Oldham Athletic, where forward Bobby Kamwa saw a 105th-minute penalty saved, only to score the winner four minutes later. The dramatic result lifted Newport out of the relegation zone and handed them control of their own destiny.
"The boys were brilliant when it came to that last weekend—they just keep pushing, believing in themselves," Fuchs added. "I expect them (Barrow) to come at us hard to start with, and it's about us to be resilient, to take our chances, and to take as much fire out of the game as possible. Just play a professional game."
For Newport, Saturday isn't just about survival—it's about proving they belong. And for fans looking to show their support, there's no better way than repping the Exiles' colors for the final showdown.
