Marco Fu, the Hong Kong snooker star and former World Championship semi-finalist, has emphatically reignited his quest to return to the sport's grandest stage. In a dominant display during the opening round of World Championship qualifying, Fu powered to a commanding 10-1 victory.

Now 48, Fu is drawing on the experience of his deep runs at the Crucible Theatre in 2006 and 2016. His performance against Thailand's Mink Nutcharut was a statement of intent, featuring three century breaks, including a superb 137. "I played quite well and scored heavily," Fu remarked, acknowledging his opponent's skill while showcasing his own formidable break-building prowess.

For Fu, currently ranked 85th, a return to Sheffield would be monumental. "It would mean everything for me to get back to the Crucible," he admitted, "but the standard now is so high." His decisive win is a crucial first step in navigating a grueling four-round qualifying gauntlet, which will ultimately produce 16 players for the main draw.

The qualifying event also saw notable exits, as 1997 champion Ken Doherty fell 10-5 to Patrick Whelan, and 12-time women's champion Reanne Evans was edged out 10-7 by Moldova's Vladislav Gradinari. The path is open, and Fu's commanding start makes him one to watch as the road to the Crucible continues.

The 2025 World Snooker Championship is set to unfold at the iconic Crucible Theatre in Sheffield from April 18th to May 4th, promising another chapter of high-stakes drama on the green baize.
