The No. 12 Florida State Seminoles softball team emphatically snapped a three-game skid on Friday, defeating the North Carolina Tar Heels 8-4 at JoAnne Graf Field. The victory improves FSU's impressive record to 37-7 overall and 13-3 in ACC play, solidifying their status as a conference powerhouse.
FSU's offense exploded from the very first pitch, quickly loading the bases with no outs in the opening inning. Anna Hinde got the scoring started with a sacrifice fly, and Bella Ruggiero followed with an RBI single. The big blow came from Kennedy Harp, who launched a three-run homer to give the Seminoles a commanding 5-0 lead before North Carolina could even settle in.
The Seminoles kept their foot on the gas in the second inning. Isa Torres ripped a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly from Jaysoni Beachum, extending the lead to 6-0. North Carolina finally got on the board in the fourth inning, capitalizing on a leadoff walk from FSU starter Jazzy Francik. A triple and a sacrifice fly plated two runs, but Francik limited the damage with back-to-back groundouts to end the threat.
Francik delivered a stellar performance in the circle, earning the win with six strong innings. She allowed just two runs on two hits and two walks, while striking out seven Tar Heel batters. Her command was key in stifling the North Carolina lineup for most of the game.
The Seminoles added insurance runs in the later innings. Marin Heller led off the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run, and Kennedy Harp added her fourth RBI of the day with a sacrifice fly in the fifth. Harp's productive day at the plate was a major catalyst for the FSU offense.
North Carolina mounted a final rally in the seventh, loading the bases and scoring two runs, but reliever Ashtyn Danley entered to record the final out via a groundout, sealing the 8-4 victory. Defensively, Jaysoni Beachum made a heads-up play in the seventh, catching a runner rounding second base for a critical out.
Overall, it was a balanced team win for FSU. The offense collected nine hits, with Isa Torres and Bella Ruggiero each recording multi-hit games. The team was also clutch, hitting .333 with runners in scoring position. The Seminoles will look to carry this momentum into the second game of the series against North Carolina on Saturday at 3 p.m. ET, broadcast on the ACC Network.
