Florida State football is making a serious push for one of Tennessee's top young running backs, and the Seminoles' early investment in the relationship could pay off this summer.
Three-star prospect Asa Barnes received his first scholarship offer from Florida State back in January, and the 2027 recruit has kept the Seminoles firmly in the mix ever since. Now, with summer visits approaching, FSU is moving up his priority list—Barnes has swapped out Kentucky for Florida State on his official visit schedule, planning to arrive in Tallahassee on June 5.
Head coach Mike Norvell and running backs coach Kam Martin are leading the charge. "I like how Norvell does things down there," Barnes told Rivals' Chad Simmons. "And I like coach Kam too… we've been talking a lot. He's a great coach. It will be great to get down there and spend some time with him."
Though Barnes has visited Tallahassee before, this will be his first official trip to campus—a critical step in the recruiting process. "I've been down there a few times… it's a good place, a good city," he said. "I'm ready to see what it's like at Florida State. I'm trying to make the best decision for my career, and I feel like Florida State is a school I need to consider."
The 6-foot, 190-pound back has already taken trips to Tennessee, Ohio State, and Alabama, giving him a strong baseline for comparison. According to Rivals' industry rankings, Barnes is the No. 470 overall recruit and the No. 36 running back nationally, while ranking as the No. 18 prospect in Tennessee.
His stock rose dramatically during his sophomore season at Westview High School, where he rushed for 812 yards on 94 carries, added 221 receiving yards on 16 catches, and scored 25 total touchdowns. That production helped Westview post a 14-1 record and reach the state championship game.
For Florida State fans, landing a player of Barnes' caliber would be a statement—especially considering the Seminoles were the first to recognize his potential. As summer approaches, all eyes will be on that June visit to see if the early offer turns into a commitment.
