The Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL) has handed down a one-game suspension to Minnesota Frost forward Britta Curl-Salemme following an illegal check to the head during Game 1 of the team's first-round playoff series against the Montreal Victoire. The incident, which occurred late in the second period, drew a major penalty and a game misconduct from officials on the ice.

In a detailed review, the PWHL Player Safety Committee determined that Curl-Salemme "made no attempt to play the puck as she raised her forearm to make direct contact with Willoughby's head, where such contact was avoidable." The hit on Montreal forward Kaitlin Willoughby was described as retaliatory in nature, coming moments after Curl-Salemme was knocked down at the blue line by Montreal's Catherine Dubois. Video analysis showed Curl-Salemme getting to her feet and immediately targeting Willoughby's head.

"It is Curl-Salemme's responsibility, in this situation, to avoid contact with Willoughby's head," the committee explained in a video breakdown. "Instead, Curl-Salemme makes no attempt to play the puck when she chooses to finish a high, retaliatory, illegal body check that makes her opponent's head the main point of contact."

The disciplinary action didn't stop there. Earlier in the same period, Curl-Salemme was involved in a post-whistle scrum with Montreal's Abby Roque, who later arrived at postgame media availability sporting a black eye—an injury she coyly attributed to "somewhere" in the dust-up. Both players received minor penalties on the play, but the Player Safety Committee took a harder stance in their review, noting that "Curl-Salemme grabbed and pulled Roque's facial protector, sending her opponent to the ice with a degree of violence that warrants supplemental discipline." For that incident, Curl-Salemme was fined $250.

This marks Curl-Salemme's fourth suspension since joining the PWHL last season—and notably, her third for illegal head contact. The recurring issue raises questions about player safety and discipline in the league's growing playoff atmosphere.

The timing couldn't be worse for the Minnesota Frost. Heading into Game 2 of their semifinal matchup on Tuesday, the team will be without one of its most productive offensive weapons. Curl-Salemme finished third in the league in scoring with 29 points across 30 games this season, making her absence a significant blow to Minnesota's championship aspirations. The Frost managed to pull out a thrilling 5-4 overtime victory in Game 1, but they'll need to dig deep to maintain momentum without their star forward in the lineup.
