From the dusty streets of Ouagadougou to the bright lights of the BayArena, Edmond Tapsoba's journey is the stuff of football dreams. Bayer 04 Leverkusen's new documentary, Fierté Burkinabè (Pride of Burkina Faso), celebrates the defender's recent long-term contract by tracing his remarkable path from West Africa to the Bundesliga—and it's a story that resonates far beyond the pitch.
The documentary opens with Tapsoba returning to his roots in Burkina Faso's vibrant capital. "Ouagadougou is maybe the best city in the world," he beams, driving through streets alive with culture and art. It's a place that shaped the humble, hardworking defender we see today, and the film doesn't shy away from showing just how deep those roots go.
His agent, Filipe Macedo Alves, puts it simply: "Burkina Faso means 'Land of Honest People,' and Edmond embodies that. Once I met his family, I understood why he is the way he is—so welcoming, so humble. Those values were passed down to him." That grounding is evident both on and off the field.
Off the pitch, Tapsoba is making an equally powerful impact. Through the Edmond Tapsoba Foundation, launched two years ago, he's changing lives across Burkina Faso. Executive secretary Sandrine Ouedraogo explains, "Our goal is to help vulnerable people escape unstable situations—whether they're disadvantaged children, the elderly, the homeless, or those facing illness or violence. We provide sustainable support so they can find stability." It's charity with a purpose, driven by the same determination Tapsoba shows in defense.
But the road to Leverkusen wasn't always smooth. Tapsoba's father, Tapsoba Mouni, initially opposed his son's football dreams, preferring he focus on school. It was his mother, Tiemtore Zoenabo, who became his biggest champion. "As long as his grades didn't suffer, she encouraged him to chase his dream," recalls the president of Salitas FC, the local club where it all began. That early support planted a seed that would grow into a Bundesliga star.
