In a move straight out of a Hollywood script—or rather, a hit TV show—actor Cristo Fernandez is swapping the pitch for the real thing. The forward, best known for his role as the ever-optimistic Dani Rojas on Apple TV's Ted Lasso, has officially signed with El Paso Locomotive FC of the USL Championship. The deal, announced Tuesday, is pending approval from the league and the U.S. Soccer Federation, with terms not disclosed.
Fernandez earned his spot after a two-month trial with the Texas-based club, even appearing in a preseason match against New Mexico United. It's a full-circle moment for the 30-year-old, who played soccer at the youth level before a injury at age 15 derailed his playing career and eventually led him to acting. Now, he's proving that second acts aren't just for TV.
"No matter where life has taken me, the dream of competing professionally never truly left my heart," Fernandez said in a statement. "I'm incredibly grateful to El Paso Locomotive FC—the club, coaches, staff, and especially my teammates—for opening the doors and giving me the opportunity to compete from day one."
Locomotive head coach Junior Gonzalez sees Fernandez as more than just a fan favorite. "Cristo is a great addition to our squad. He gives us another attacking threat, and he brings a ton of passion and leadership to the locker room," Gonzalez said. For fans of Ted Lasso, it's a reminder that sometimes, life really does imitate art—and that the beautiful game always finds a way back to those who love it.
