In the world of high school softball, milestones are the moments that define a career. For York High School senior Piper Catanese, that moment came in dramatic fashion during the second game of her final season.

Entering the Class B South campaign needing just three hits to reach the coveted 100-hit milestone, the standout shortstop wasted no time making her mark. After collecting a hit in York's season-opening victory over Greely on April 27, Catanese found herself just two hits away from history as the Wildcats traveled to Wells on May 1.

The journey to 100 hits is never straightforward, and Catanese's path was no exception. After lining out in her first at-bat, she responded with the composure of a seasoned veteran, singling to center field. Then, in the fourth inning, she delivered the milestone hit—a sharp single to left center that etched her name in York softball history.

What happened next was pure sports magic. York head coach Kevin Giannino immediately called timeout, and the entire Wildcats roster erupted from the visitor's dugout, sprinting to first base to celebrate with their teammate. "It was a nice little moment for Piper, she deserved it," Giannino said. "I think she was a little bit surprised when she turned around and had the whole team standing in front of her at first base to congratulate her. Reaching 100 hits in the second game of your senior year is quite a pretty significant accomplishment."

Catanese's achievement is even more impressive given her unique path. After spending her first two years at Marshwood High School, she transferred to York ahead of her junior season. Since then, she's made what Giannino describes as "a tremendous contribution right out of the gate."

The Wildcats capped off the memorable day with a dominant 17-0 victory over Wells, improving to 2-0 on the season. For her performance, Catanese was named the Seacoast Standout Athlete of the Day—a fitting honor for a player who turned a personal milestone into a team celebration.
