In a dramatic Europa League semi-final first leg, SC Freiburg suffered a heartbreaking last-gasp defeat to Braga, leaving their European dreams hanging by a thread. Goalkeeper Noah Atubolu was just seconds away from being hailed as a hero, but a moment of hesitation proved costly as the Portuguese side snatched a late winner.

The match started with intensity as Braga created the first chance in the 5th minute through Pau Victor, following a quickly taken free-kick. Before Freiburg could find their rhythm, the visitors struck. A poor clearance from Jordy Makengo allowed Demir Ege Tıknaz to finish from close range after a superb assist from Víctor Gómez.

Freiburg responded with Johan Manzambi trying his luck from distance in the 10th minute, but his ambitious effort failed to trouble the goalkeeper. However, defensive miscommunication soon handed Braga another golden opportunity. In a controversial moment, English referee Anthony Taylor allowed play to continue despite Vítor Carvalho's foul on Igor Matanović when the defender was the last man back. Braga escaped a straight red card, and Freiburg capitalized immediately—Niklas Beste delivered a timely assist for Vincenzo Grifo to score his third goal of the knockout stage, leveling the match.

The setback forced Braga into an early change as captain Ricardo Horta was substituted due to injury. The remainder of the first half lacked major incidents until the final minute of normal time. Philipp Linehart made a needless challenge on Gustaf Lagerbielke inside the box, gifting Braga a penalty. But Atubolu, the 23-year-old shot-stopper, came to the rescue, denying Rodrigo Zalazar from the spot. Remarkably, Atubolu has now saved six of the ten penalties he has faced since his Freiburg debut.

The second half began cautiously, with both sides struggling to create clear-cut chances in the first 20 minutes. Maximilian Eggestein forced the first save of the half, with Lukas Hornicek parrying his shot away. Freiburg then appealed for a penalty after a challenge on Makengo, but Taylor waved away their protests.

As the clock ticked down, Braga increased their tempo in search of a winner before the away leg. Freiburg's Linehart was fortunate to avoid conceding another penalty after a reckless challenge, but the warning signs were clear. In the dying moments, Atubolu—so close to heroic status—hesitated, and Braga pounced. The Portuguese side scored a last-gasp winner, leaving Freiburg heartbroken and with a mountain to climb in the second leg.

For Freiburg, the dream of European glory remains alive but fragile. With the away leg looming, they'll need to regroup quickly and find their sharpness in front of goal. One thing is certain: this tie is far from over.
