Freiburg are through to their first European final after beating 10-man Braga in Thursday's Europa League semi-final second leg.

History was made at the Europa-Park Stadion as Freiburg punched their ticket to a first-ever European final, overcoming a 10-man Braga side with a commanding performance in Thursday's Europa League semi-final second leg.

Carrying a slender 2-1 advantage from the first leg in Portugal, the visitors' hopes took a severe blow when Mario Dorgeles—who had bagged Braga's dramatic late winner in the first leg—was shown a straight red card for a professional foul on Jan-Niklas Beste. From that moment, the momentum swung decisively in Freiburg's favor.

The hosts made their numerical superiority count almost immediately. Jean-Baptiste Gorby's attempted clearance took a cruel deflection off Lukas Kubler's knee, trickling agonizingly over the line via the inside of the far post. It may have been a stroke of fortune, but Freiburg's second goal was pure magic. Twenty-year-old midfielder Yohan Manzambi picked up the ball on the edge of the box, carved out a yard of space, and unleashed an unstoppable curling drive into the far corner that sent the home faithful into raptures just before the interval.

Braga showed signs of life when Victor Gomez rounded goalkeeper Noah Atubolu only to see his effort crash against the woodwork late in the first half. After the break, Vincenzo Grifo was denied by the same post, while Braga keeper Lukas Hornicek produced a sensational double save to deny Igor Matanovic and Matthias Ginter with 20 minutes remaining. But even the 23-year-old shot-stopper could do nothing to prevent Kubler from powering home a towering header to extend Freiburg's lead.

Pau Victor's close-range header offered Braga a glimmer of hope with seven minutes left, but Carlos Vicens' side couldn't find a way back. Julian Schuster's men held firm to seal a memorable victory that sets up a tantalizing final showdown with Aston Villa in Istanbul on Wednesday, 20 May (20:00 BST). Unai Emery's side booked their place after thrashing Nottingham Forest 4-0 in the second leg of their semi-final at Villa Park.

Thursday's triumph was Freiburg's 11th consecutive home win in the Europa League, equalling Sevilla's all-time record set between April 2014 and March 2016—a fitting achievement for a club writing its own chapter in European football history.
