Freedom’s Donovan Davis commits to Iowa State

In a move that's sending ripples through the basketball world, Freedom High School junior Donovan Davis has officially committed to Iowa State University to continue his hoops career. The announcement, made Wednesday evening, marks a major milestone for the 6-foot-8 power forward, who is currently ranked as the No. 2 player in Wisconsin and the No. 7 power forward nationally in the Class of 2027.

Davis chose the Cyclones over a star-studded list of finalists that included the Wisconsin Badgers, Marquette Golden Eagles, Iowa Hawkeyes, and Nebraska Cornhuskers. For a young athlete who's been chasing this dream since childhood, the decision was a no-brainer.

"I'm pretty excited. I'm pumped. To have an opportunity to play college basketball has always been a dream of mine. To play for a really good team like Iowa State? It's a dream come true," Davis shared with Local 5 Sports, his enthusiasm palpable.

This commitment isn't just a personal victory—it's a historic moment for Freedom High School. Head coach Andrew Gibbons couldn't contain his pride. "Our Athletic Director alluded to it, but Davis is the first Division I guy since 1990 for Freedom. It's a special day for a special kid and just a joy to be a part of," Gibbons said.

Davis's junior season stats read like a video game cheat code. He's already rewritten the program's record books, sitting atop the leaderboard in points (1,761), rebounds (946), steals (221), and assists (376), while ranking second all-time in blocked shots with 69. These numbers aren't just impressive—they're the kind of foundation that builds a legacy.

At Iowa State, Davis joins a growing Fox Valley pipeline that reads like a who's who of Wisconsin basketball talent. He'll follow in the footsteps of former Oshkosh North star Tyrese Haliburton, who played for the Cyclones from 2018 to 2020, and current Cyclone Xzavion Mitchell, who's entering his sophomore season. Davis noted that he has a strong relationship with Mitchell and even had a chance to chat with Haliburton during a visit to campus.

For fans of the game, this commitment is a reminder that the future of basketball is bright—and it's wearing Cyclone colors. Whether you're a die-hard Iowa State supporter or just love seeing local talent make it big, Donovan Davis is a name you'll want to remember.
