In a moment that felt like the culmination of years of hard work, Freedom High School basketball star Donovan Davis made his college decision official on May 6, committing to Iowa State University in front of an electric crowd of family and supporters inside the Freedom fieldhouse.

"I'm pretty excited," Davis said, beaming. "To have the opportunity to play college basketball has always been a dream of mine. And, you know, to play for a really good team like Iowa State—it's a dream come true."

The 6-foot-8 standout had plenty of suitors to choose from. After announcing official visits to Wisconsin, Iowa, Marquette, Nebraska, and Iowa State, Davis ultimately decided the Cyclones were the perfect fit. His offer list also included Syracuse, Colorado State, and Cal-Berkeley, but only one program felt like home.

Davis isn't just any recruit—he's the No. 32 overall prospect in the 2027 class, according to Rivals.com, and for good reason. Wrapping up his junior year at Freedom, he earned Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association all-state honors in Division 3, was named North Eastern Conference Player of the Year, and made the league's all-defensive team. His stat line this past season reads like a video game: 21.7 points, 12.0 rebounds, and 4.7 assists per game.

He'll be joining a Cyclones program that's on an impressive upward trajectory under head coach T.J. Otzelberger, a Milwaukee native who knows a thing or two about winning. Otzelberger, a former two-year captain at UW-Whitewater, recently signed a 10-year contract extension through 2036 after leading Iowa State to its third Sweet 16 appearance in five years. This past season, the Cyclones finished 29-8—tied for the second-most wins in school history—and were ranked No. 8 in the final AP Top 25 poll.

Iowa State has made no secret of its focus on Wisconsin talent. This past season's roster included Jamarion Batemon of Milwaukee Academy of Science and Anthony Rise, and now Davis adds his name to that growing pipeline. For a player with his size, skill, and work ethic, the future in Ames looks bright.
