Eintracht Frankfurt's dreams of European football next season took a devastating hit on Friday night, as they squandered an early lead to fall 3-2 against Borussia Dortmund in a thrilling Bundesliga clash at Signal Iduna Park.
The visitors got off to a dream start, with teenage sensation Can Uzun silencing the Dortmund crowd less than two minutes into the match. The young striker capitalized on brilliant work from Mahmoud Dahoud inside the box to slot home and give Frankfurt a shock early advantage.
But Dortmund, even with little left to play for in the league, showed their class as halftime approached. Serhou Guirassy produced a superb finish from Julian Ryerson's pinpoint cross to level the score in the 42nd minute, before Nico Schlotterbeck completed the turnaround with a stoppage-time strike that sent the hosts into the break with momentum.
The second half saw Dortmund extend their lead through Samuele Inácio, who marked his first goal for the club with a powerful volley from Max Beier's cross to make it 3-1. Frankfurt pushed hard for a comeback, and Jonathan Burkardt pulled one back three minutes from time, but it proved too little, too late.
With Bayern Munich already crowned champions and Dortmund having secured a Champions League spot, the win was primarily about pride for the home side—but it also guaranteed them second place in the Bundesliga, putting them out of reach of RB Leipzig.
For Frankfurt, however, the result was a bitter pill to swallow. They are now locked in a fierce battle for seventh place—the final spot that offers a Conference League playoff berth. The loss hands the advantage to Freiburg, who can secure seventh with a win at Hamburg on Sunday. Freiburg currently sit on 44 points, while Frankfurt remain stuck on 43, having played one more game.
As the Bundesliga season enters its final stretch, Frankfurt's European hopes are hanging by a thread—and they'll need results to go their way if they want to keep those dreams alive.
