Frankfort, the state's top-ranked team, showcased their championship pedigree with a dominant doubleheader sweep on Saturday, taking down South Harrison 11-4 and blanking Lincoln 5-0. The Falcons' pitching staff was the story of the day, with both starters going the distance in impressive fashion.
Lanson Orndorf was nearly untouchable in Game 2, firing a complete-game one-hit shutout against Lincoln. He struck out nine and walked just two over seven innings, keeping the opposition off-balance all afternoon. In the opener, Carson Dust was equally electric, fanning 14 batters while allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits in a seven-inning performance.
Frankfort (17-7) showed their resilience in Game 1, trailing 4-1 after five innings before erupting for seven runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh. Jaxon Hare led the comeback charge, going 3-for-5 with four RBIs. Blake Jacobs added three hits including a double, while Jesus Perdew finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Lanson Orndorf and Cole Shanholtz each doubled and singled, and Gunnar Bradshaw also chipped in with a double. Against Lincoln, Hare stayed hot with a 2-for-3 day featuring a double and two RBIs, while Bradshaw had two hits and two RBIs, and Jacobs singled twice.
Meanwhile, it was a tough day for No. 2 Hampshire, who dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Grafton High, falling 3-1 to Grafton and 8-6 to Elkins. The Trojans (13-10) struggled to solve Grafton's Grant Murphy, who nearly shut them out before Branson Kline's two-out single in the seventh finally got them on the board. Brayden Hott went 2-for-3 with a double, but it wasn't enough. Channing Wilt took the loss, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits over six innings.
In Game 2, Hampshire jumped out to a 4-0 lead before Elkins rallied with two runs in each of the final four innings to steal the win. Mason Wolford provided the power with a solo home run and two RBIs, Mason Slade ripped a two-run double, Wyatt Adams doubled twice, and Wilt added two singles. Elkins' Dyer Barger and Trevor Hogue both went deep to fuel the comeback. Zeke McDonald took the loss for Hampshire, while Barger threw a complete game for Elkins. The Trojans will look to bounce back when they host Moorefield (13-7) on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
In a highlight-reel performance at Pittsburgh's PNC Park, Petersburg's Payton Metheny delivered a gem reminiscent of MLB star Paul Skenes, striking out 15 batters in a shutout victory over Keyser. Metheny scattered six hits over seven dominant innings, walking none while keeping Keyser (9-15) off the scoreboard. Owen Reel led Petersburg (9-16) at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs. Lukas Wolford doubled and singled, Broty Sites drove in two, and Metheny and Kaleb Kuhn each singled twice. Keyser's Hunter Harr was a bright spot, going 3-for-3 with a double, but Lucas Williamson took the loss on the mound.
