The 2025 season did not go well for quarterback Geno Smith.

The 2025 season was a tough one for quarterback Geno Smith, but a fresh start with the New York Jets has him poised for a major comeback. After spending a decade away from the team that drafted him, Smith is back in green and white, and his new offensive coordinator, Frank Reich, couldn't be more excited about the reunion.

Reich, who returns to the pros after a brief stint with the Panthers, made it clear on Wednesday that Smith is the "perfect" fit for his offensive system. "I've liked Geno from Day 1," Reich said during his press conference. "When he was coming out of West Virginia, I had a high grade on him. But meeting him in person? I'm even more impressed. His resilience, his toughness—those are the No. 1 attributes you need in a quarterback, especially when you're trying to turn things around. Tough mentally, tough physically. I feel that from Geno on every front."

Reich highlighted Smith's journey through the ups and downs of the NFL as a key strength. "His experience, the highs and lows—he's had great success and dealt with tough seasons. If you play in this league long enough, you face that. And if you're the right kind of leader, you come out better for it. I think that's the version of Geno Smith we're getting—the best version. His best football is ahead of him."

Smith's recent track record backs up that optimism. From 2021 to 2024, he started 52 games for the Seattle Seahawks, posting a 28-24 record while completing 68.5% of his passes for 12,928 yards, 76 touchdowns, and just 36 interceptions. If he can build on those numbers—or even surpass them—the Jets could be looking at a much brighter 2026 season. For a team searching for stability under center, Smith's return to New York might just be the perfect play.
