The curtain is closing on a remarkable 15-year chapter at AFC Bournemouth. Simon Francis, the club's first-team technical director, is set to depart at the end of the season, with reports linking him to a new overseas opportunity. The Saudi Pro League's Al Hilal are among the teams reportedly keen to bring the former Cherries defender on board.
Francis's journey with Bournemouth began in 2011, when he first arrived on loan from Charlton Athletic. He made the move permanent in January 2012, and what followed was a story of loyalty and success. Over the years, he amassed more than 300 appearances, becoming a cornerstone of Eddie Howe's squad that famously climbed from League One to the Premier League.
After hanging up his boots in 2020, Francis seamlessly transitioned into a new role behind the scenes. He joined Bournemouth's recruitment setup as assistant technical director, working alongside former teammate Richard Hughes. When Hughes moved to Liverpool in 2024, Francis was promoted to first-team technical director, a role he has held ever since.
This departure marks the end of an era for the Cherries, but it also signals a new chapter for the 41-year-old. Whether he heads to the Middle East or elsewhere, his legacy at Bournemouth—both on the pitch and in the boardroom—is firmly cemented.
