The basketball court just got a little less familiar for Ruston High fans. One of the program's brightest stars is packing his bags for a new challenge out west.
Darren Ford, the electric 6-foot-4 point guard who helped lead the Bearcats to the LHSAA Division I nonselect state championship game last season, is transferring to AZ Compass Prep in Chandler, Arizona. The move was announced Tuesday by the Arizona program on social media.
Ford was a powerhouse for Ruston, averaging 20.7 points per game en route to LSWA First Team All-State honors. As a four-star recruit in the Class of 2028, he's widely regarded as one of the top guards in the nation. His game is built on explosive scoring, high basketball IQ, and an intensity that fuels his team's winning mentality.
Last winter, Ford was instrumental in Ruston's historic run. The Bearcats captured their first district title since 2022 and reached the LHSAA finals for the first time since 1988. In the championship game, Ford put up 19 points, four rebounds, three assists, and a steal—though it wasn't enough to topple two-time defending champion Zachary.
Ford's journey began with a standout freshman season at Ouachita before he transferred to Ruston. Now, he's taking his talents to the national prep scene, where he'll face elite competition daily. His recruitment is already heating up, with offers from LSU, NC State, Arizona State, and Kansas State on the table.
For Ruston, losing a player of Ford's caliber is a tough blow, but his move to AZ Compass Prep signals his ambition to compete at the highest level. For fans of the game, it's a reminder that in today's basketball landscape, the path to stardom often involves a few detours.
