The Minnesota Golden Gophers have landed a major recruit, and this time, they’re going south of the border—all the way to Iowa City. Four-star linebacker Tate Wallace has officially committed to head coach P.J. Fleck’s program, bringing a versatile and explosive talent to the defensive side of the ball.

Wallace isn’t just a one-trick pony. Last season, he was a dual-threat standout, making plays on both offense and defense. As a linebacker, he posted an impressive stat line: 49.5 total tackles, 18 tackles for loss, 8.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles. But when he switched to tight end, he was equally dangerous, hauling in 40 receptions for 611 yards and 10 touchdowns. That kind of production doesn’t come around often, and it’s clear why he drew offers from a stacked list of Power 4 programs, including Arizona, Arizona State, Kansas State, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Purdue, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.

So, where will Wallace fit in at Minnesota? Most projections have him lining up as an outside linebacker, with the potential to develop into a dynamic edge rusher. He’s a powerful, hard-charging force off the edge who thrives on taking on blocks and creating pressure through sheer effort. While he might not have the size of past Gopher greats like Jack Gibbens or Matt Kingsbury, Wallace brings a relentless motor and physicality reminiscent of Mariano Sori-Marin—a player who excelled in that same position coach role. That combination of grit and versatility makes him an intriguing piece for defensive coordinator Danny Collins’ scheme, and Gopher fans have every reason to be excited about what’s to come.
