Four-star edge Jayce Brewer commits to Michigan: “It’s a great opportunity”

In a move that has Wolverine fans buzzing, four-star edge rusher Jayce Brewer officially announced his commitment to the University of Michigan on Saturday during a live broadcast on the Rivals YouTube Channel. The standout from Franklin Central High School in Indianapolis, Indiana, chose the maize and blue over a crowded field of suitors that included Indiana, Purdue, Tennessee, and several others.

"What made Michigan right? Everything," Brewer said with palpable excitement. "It just felt right. Felt like home."

Brewer, who ranks as the nation's No. 18 edge rusher and No. 214 overall prospect according to Rivals, becomes the seventh commit in Michigan's 2027 recruiting class. His decision came after a standout spring visit to Ann Arbor, where he got an up-close look at the program's storied tradition.

"Just getting to play for a historic program," Brewer explained. "All the history they have developing d-linemen. They have a great tradition there. They have the most wins in college football history."

Proximity also played a key role in his decision. "It's not too far from home. It's right up the street. My parents can come see me. That's also a big thing," he added, highlighting the balance between big-time college football and family accessibility.

Brewer is eager to suit up for head coach Kyle Whittingham and new defensive coordinator Jay Hill, who are known for cultivating elite defensive talent. Over the past two seasons, Brewer has been a force on the field, racking up 69 tackles, 21 tackles for loss, 17 quarterback hurries, and 5.5 sacks while competing in Indiana's toughest conference.

Franklin Central head coach Jayson West couldn't say enough about his star player's work ethic. "He never misses an opportunity to get better," West said. "He's never missed weights or practices and he doesn't like to come out of games. He likes to play football."

West also praised Brewer's football IQ and physical tools. "He's done a great job developing. He's got a high football IQ. He'll fit in really well with their scheme and what they're trying to do. He plays hard. If he keeps doing that he's got a good shot to do this for a long time. He's got good speed to power. He's really bendy for how big he is. He knows he has to keep developing and understands there's a path ahead of him and keep on it."

For Michigan fans, this commitment signals another building block in a defense that continues to reload with top-tier talent. And for Brewer, the journey is just beginning.
