The race for the state softball tournament is heating up, and four local teams are just one win away from punching their tickets to Oxford. After an action-packed first day of regionals on Monday, Hartselle, Athens, West Morgan, and West Limestone all find themselves on the verge of glory. Each squad will take the field on Tuesday in their respective regional finals, battling for the top qualifier spot in their classification and a coveted berth in next week's state tournament.
For West Morgan, the stakes couldn't be higher. The Rebels are chasing their first state tournament appearance since 2014, and they're doing it with grit and determination. After edging past Hamilton in a tight 2-1 opener and then shutting out Wilson 4-0, West Morgan now faces Good Hope in the north regional final. Senior Chasity Rikard, who dominated in the circle with a complete-game shutout against Wilson and nine strikeouts in the opener, summed up the team's fire: "This is so important to me. I'm honestly willing to miss my graduation if it means us going to state."
In Class 6A, a familiar rivalry takes center stage. Hartselle and Athens will clash in the north regional final for the second straight year, with a direct path to state on the line. Last season, Hartselle came out on top with a 2-0 victory, but this year promises to be another battle. Hartselle head coach Anna Hall knows what to expect: "With Athens, it's always going to be back and forth. It's never going to be a cakewalk. It's always going to be tough because they keep fighting like we keep fighting."
Hartselle earned their spot with a pair of impressive wins. They opened regional play with a 10-0 no-hitter against Fort Payne, thanks to a combined effort from Aubree Peak and Addison Chudy. Katie Norgard led the offense, going 3-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs, while Amelia Fox knocked in three runs on a triple and Jesi Chittham added a two-run homer. In a dramatic second game, Hartselle outlasted Hazel Green 10-4 in nine innings, highlighted by Bailey Lawrence's game-saving catch over the left-field wall that robbed a potential go-ahead home run. Norgard struck again with a three-run homer, and Hatsumi Peterson drove in three runs on a home run and a double.
Meanwhile, West Limestone will take on Plainview in the east regional final, while Austin heads to the losers' bracket of the east regional after falling to Thompson in the second round.
With everything on the line, Tuesday's games promise high drama and unforgettable moments. These four teams are just one win away from making their state tournament dreams a reality—and for players like Rikard, the journey is worth every sacrifice.
