Formula E is steering into a new era, and the buzz surrounding its Gen4 car suggests the all-electric series is finally winning over the hearts of traditional motorsport fans. Since its launch in 2014, Formula E has often been viewed as the underdog—a niche alternative to the roar of combustion engines. Skepticism about electric racing, combined with its unconventional street-circuit focus and a lingering reputation as a home for Formula 1 cast-offs, has kept many longtime racing enthusiasts at arm's length. The championship itself has even acknowledged that its primary goal was to attract fresh audiences rather than convert existing petrolheads.

But the tide is turning. The arrival of the Gen4 car, set to debut at the end of the year, promises to be a game-changer. With a staggering 800bhp in Attack Mode and during qualifying, plus permanent all-wheel drive, this next-generation machine is expected to lap faster than current Formula 2 cars—and close the gap to Formula 1 like never before. For the first time in history, electric racing cars could match the performance of top-tier single-seaters, a milestone that's turning skeptics into believers.

The shift isn't just under the hood. Formula E's calendar is evolving too, with more permanent tracks replacing some of the tight, twisty street circuits that defined its early years. This move toward traditional racing venues is another nod to fans who crave the classic motorsport experience. Ellie Norman, Formula E's chief marketing officer, has noticed a palpable change in sentiment since the Gen4 car's public unveiling at Paul Ricard. "It's been wonderful to read the comments and see the conversations on Reddit, Discord, and across broader media," she shared. "Within what I'd describe as a more traditional motorsport fan base, the positivity toward how stunning this car looks and its performance is really turning heads."

Norman adds that many Formula 1 enthusiasts are now giving Formula E a second look. "A lot of fans who have traditionally watched Formula 1 are actually now considering Formula E and switching into watching it, just because we are—and have been—the leaders in electrification. We can regenerate more power than a Formula 1 car can deploy, and we're experts in this field." For a series that once struggled for respect, this newfound resonance with traditional fans signals a thrilling new chapter—one where electric racing isn't just an alternative, but a contender.
