Antonelli won two straight races before F1's unexpected April hiatus.

Mercedes and Kimi Antonelli are proving they're the team to beat in Formula 1 this season, and they showed no signs of rust after an unexpected month-long break. The young points leader stormed to pole position for the Miami Grand Prix on Saturday, holding off a late charge from Max Verstappen to secure the top spot on the grid.

Antonelli has been on fire since the season opener. After winning back-to-back races in China and Japan, he carried that momentum straight into Miami qualifying. This marks his third consecutive pole position, continuing a dominant run that has put him seven points ahead of teammate George Russell in the drivers' standings. The brief hiatus—caused by the cancellation of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix due to the Iran War—did nothing to slow him down.

Verstappen's qualifying performance was a surprise, given Red Bull's struggles so far in 2026. A late flyer in Q3 pushed him ahead of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and McLaren's Lando Norris, showing that the defending champion still has fight left in him. Russell will start fifth, ahead of Lewis Hamilton (Leclerc's teammate) and Oscar Piastri (Norris's teammate), setting up an exciting battle for Sunday's race.

With Antonelli on pole and the Miami heat turning up the pressure, all eyes will be on the start line. Can he make it three wins in a row, or will Verstappen and the chasing pack spoil the party? One thing's for sure—this season is just getting started.
